S&KLR Passenger Numbers Up

The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway’s 2005 Centenary Season has come to an end with the recent Gala Weekend. The Railway is pleased to announce that passenger numbers were up by over ten percent on last year, which is a satisfying increase.

The season has seen the departure of standard gauge static locomotive No4, the construction of a new 5 inch gauge miniature railway along the Creek fenceline at Kemsley Down, the arrival of our first ever visiting steam locomotive Chevallier from the Great Whipsnade Railway, the return to service of diesel locomotive Edward Lloyd and the centenary of steam locomotives Premier and Leader.

The railway will reopen for Santa Specials in December (every weekend leading up to Christmas and then Boxing Day) and the 2006 Season will start on Good Friday. For futher information please call The S&K Directory on 0871 222 1568 (local rate call), the Booking Hotline on 0871 222 1569 (local rate call) or visit our website Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway

WHR extension begins

At long last the extension of the Welsh Highland Railway from the south has begun. On the 22nd October the fence came down at Penymount and work began on the road crossing. By the following day the rails were in place and the first train for over 60 years passed over the crossing. By the middle of the week the rails had reached the second crossing at Cynfal.

At the moment the trackwork has a temporary appearance as the steel sleepers to be used are presently on their way from India and will not arrive until later next month.
