Deep in the heart of Blencathra, four miles east of Keswick and next to the Borrowdale valley lies Threlkeld Quarry. A former Granite quarry, various minerals were also mined here. Nowadays the quarry is the Lakeland museum of mining and quarrying. The quarry is also home to the vintage excavator trust. A narrow gauge railway is sited in the quarry, some of it on the original quarry trackbed, and there is a collection of locomotives. All are industrial types and internal combustion. A steam loco is also being restored for use on the railway.
