The former stone mine/ammo dump at Monkton Farleigh was a vast series of tunnels which during the war stored some several millions of tons of explosives. The site was served by two surface entrances and a depot on the London/Bristol main line with a 3/4 mile tunnel into the mine.
About half of the site had a cable-hauled railway while the other half used conveyor belts.
During the mid 80s it was open to the public for a while, which gave a chance to have a look around!
