This superbly engineered railway was constructed by the Corps of Royal Engineers and for nearly a century carried hundreds of thousands of tons of high explosives in the form of shells and torpedoes.Working too and from the secure bunkers in the Chattenden area ammunition was taken down to the Medway for loading in barges and naval ships. It was a great tragedy when the War Ministry ceased operation that the local councils did not acquire the system as it would have made a superb tourist amenity.
