The slate mine is the reason for the existence of the railway. The slate was originally take out of the mountains around Blaenau Ffestiniog in small quantities on the backs of pack animals and on farm carts over very rough roads down to the River Dwyryd. It was loded onto shallow river boats for transport downstream where it was loaded into sailing ships at Port Madoc (now Porthmadog).
