South Downs Light Railway

By Brian Bird

The South Downs Light Railway, situated at Wyevale Garden Centre, Stopham Road (A283) Pulborough, West Sussex, RH20 1DS was founded in 1999. It is owned and operated by the volunteer members of South Downs Light Railway Society Ltd. For many years there was a 7 1/4” railway on the site so the first task of the new Society was to regauge the track to 10 1/4”. Later an extension was built involving the digging of a cutting with a maximum depth of 14ft and the whole line was relaid with heavier section rail. The track is about 3/4 mile in length.

Over the last couple of years a new station awning has been constructed and a ticket office/waiting room. Currently work is in progress on a new engine shed and workshop.

The Railway owns “Pulborough” an Exmoor 0-4-2 tank engine and is home to “Peggy” another Exmoor loco and several scale engines including “Flying Scotsman”, King Arthur class “Sir Sagramore”, Black 5 “Ayrshire Yeomanry”, LMS Mogul, Royal Scot, “Alice” a Bagnall NG tender loco and a couple of diesels.

The Railway operates at weekends and on Bank Holidays from March to September, Wednesdays in August and, for Santa Specials, at Christmas.
